500万人请愿，总统下令彻查。3月25日，"N号房"主要运营者赵主彬被首尔警方押送检方，对着这名年仅25岁、韩国首个因性犯罪被公开示众的犯罪嫌疑人，不少围观群众怒喊："判他法定最高刑罚！"

500,000 petitions, president orders investigation. On March 25, the main operator of the "Nth Room", Cho Ju-bin, was escorted by Seoul police to prosecutors. Facing this 25-year-old suspect - the first sex criminal to be publicly displayed in South Korea - many onlookers shouted: "Give him the maximum legal penalty!"

"N号房"是社交软件Telegram上多个色情聊天室的代称。犯罪者在这些聊天室中有偿向成员提供受害女性的性剥削照片及视频。据韩媒报道，当前已知受害女性有74人，其中未成年女性16人，年龄最小的仅11岁。

The "Nth Room" refers to multiple pornographic chat rooms on Telegram. Criminals provided paying members with sexually exploitative photos and videos of female victims. According to Korean media reports, there are currently 74 known female victims, including 16 minors, the youngest being only 11 years old.

运营者通过发钓鱼链接、假扮警方、发布有偿兼职等方式窃取女性个人私密资料，随后长期胁迫其提供性剥削照片、视频；据《韩民族日报》卧底记者消息，运营者还会把女孩带到线下性侵，并同步向线上会员直播。

Operators obtained women's private information through phishing links, impersonating police, and posting paid part-time jobs, then coerced them into providing sexually exploitative photos and videos over long periods. According to undercover reporters from The Hankyoreh, operators would also take girls offline to sexually assault them while live-streaming to online members.

付费聊天室会员超过26万人（不排除重复加入各群组可能），据虚拟货币交易留痕，其中包括教授、艺人、体育明星、著名创业公司CEO等知名人士。

There were over 260,000 paying chat room members (excluding possible duplicate memberships across groups). According to virtual currency transaction records, these included professors, entertainers, sports stars, and CEOs of famous startups.

韩媒记者平均每天潜入约30个房间，所有房间单日均有数千名男性参与，在每个房间内，单日上传和分享视频最多可达1.5万条；2019年初，Telegram成为Google商店在韩国下载量增长最快的APP之一。

Korean reporters infiltrated about 30 rooms daily on average, with each room having thousands of male participants daily. In each room, up to 15,000 videos could be uploaded and shared daily. In early 2019, Telegram became one of the fastest-growing apps in Korea's Google Store.

有受访对象将韩国根基颇深的等级制度和父权文化视作"N号房"的深层土壤："韩国历史上并未就父权性别制度作颠覆性革命，男尊女卑或者男主外女主内的传统有很大可能从前现代延续下来。"

Some interviewees pointed to Korea's deeply rooted hierarchical system and patriarchal culture as the underlying soil for the "Nth Room": "South Korea has not undergone a revolutionary change to its patriarchal gender system historically. The traditions of male superiority and distinct gender roles have likely continued from pre-modern times."

Legal Dilemmas

虽然赵主彬犯罪性质十分恶劣，但"按照现行韩国法律，其最多可能获刑10年"。《青少年性保护法》第11条规定，持有未成年人性剥削材料者，处1年以下有期徒刑或2000万韩元以下罚金。

Although Cho Ju-bin's crimes are extremely heinous, "under current South Korean law, he could face up to 10 years in prison." Article 11 of the Juvenile Sexual Protection Act stipulates that those possessing sexually exploitative materials of minors face up to 1 year in prison or fines under 20 million won.

韩国政府称要就"N号房"事件制定"杜绝网络性犯罪的根本对策"，但别忘了，整整一年前的"胜利门"，虽然已"赌上检方和警方各自组织的命运"，最终两位主犯不过被判了6年和5年有期徒刑。

The South Korean government claims it will establish "fundamental countermeasures to eradicate online sex crimes" regarding the "Nth Room" incident. But let's not forget that exactly a year ago in the "Burning Sun scandal", despite "staking the fate of prosecution and police organizations", the two main culprits only received 6 and 5 year sentences respectively.
