According to EBRUN report on June 25th, LAOX (the largest duty-free shop operator in Japan owned by Suning Commerce Group) has formed strategic partnership with Japanese holding company Onward, jointly establishing an apparel export joint venture.
The new company is scheduled to commence operation on September 1st, with products simultaneously launched on Chinese e-commerce platforms. The joint venture aims to achieve 20 billion yen (approximately 1 billion RMB) in revenue within three years. With registered capital of about 400 million yen (approximately 20.64 million RMB), Onward holds 51% shares while LAOX owns 49%.
Regarding division of responsibilities, Onward will be responsible for designing and manufacturing fashion products with Japanese cultural characteristics, while LAOX will handle sales through its cross-border e-commerce platform and domestic duty-free shops in Japan. Onward President Michinobu Yasumoto stated: "Japan has strong manufacturing foundation, and we hope to expand overseas markets through this cooperation."
It's noteworthy that Onward previously encountered difficulties in Chinese market, with most of its youth brands like "23区" closed due to losses. By leveraging LAOX's popularity among Chinese tourists, both parties hope to create new sales channels. LAOX President Luo Yiwen emphasized: "Overseas consumers not only pursue high-quality Japanese products, but also favor goods incorporating Japanese fashion elements."
As an important part of Suning's overseas expansion, LAOX plans to open 50 new duty-free shops in Japan within three years. The cooperation also considers launching direct mail service for Japanese products, preparing for Suning's cross-border O2O strategy.
