Recently, the UK government issued a ban, requiring government agencies to stop using surveillance cameras made in China. This decision echoes previous US actions, raising renewed concerns about trade protectionism internationally.
UK Energy Secretary Shapps publicly stated the requirement for Chinese company Nexperia to sell its 86% stake in British chipmaker NWF, citing so-called "national security" concerns. Notably, NWF was in negative equity when acquired by the Chinese company, only achieving debt repayment after Chinese capital injection.
The UK government currently primarily uses products from Hangzhou Hikvision and Zhejiang Dahua, the top two global security equipment manufacturers. The US FCC recently also announced bans on five Chinese tech companies (Huawei, ZTE, Hikvision, Dahua and Hytera) from selling equipment in America.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning responded: "China consistently requires its enterprises to comply with international rules and local laws, while firmly opposing any country's abuse of national security concepts to suppress Chinese companies. The Chinese government will resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises."
Analysts point out that Western countries have increasingly used "national security" as justification to restrict Chinese tech companies. Such practices not only disrupt international trade order but ultimately harm the economic interests of the implementing countries themselves. Particularly amid weak global economic recovery, such protectionist measures will exacerbate Britain's economic challenges.
