Guangxi, China - Recently, a well-preserved Qing Dynasty star anise oil distillation site was discovered in Longzhou County, providing valuable physical evidence for studying the local spice industry's development history.
The site features a stove platform measuring 4.45 meters long and 1.95 meters wide, constructed with rammed earth and featuring three fire holes. Huang Wei from the Longzhou Cultural Relics Protection and Archaeology Center stated: "This is the only officially approved star anise oil distillation site from the Qing Dynasty discovered in Longzhou County so far."
Historical Background: Longzhou's star anise cultivation dates back to the Song Dynasty, giving the township its name. During the Qing Dynasty, local chieftains presented star anise as tribute to the imperial court. After Longzhou became a treaty port in late Qing, star anise became a major export to Europe for perfume, beverage and medicine production.
Lü Danfeng, director of the center, noted: "This discovery reveals technical details of star anise oil distillation during the Qing Dynasty, holding significant value for studying local industrial history and offering reference for modern processing techniques."
Industry Revitalization: With current cultivation area exceeding 30,000 mu (2,000 hectares) and 2023 dried fruit output reaching about 2,819 tons, local authorities plan to combine traditional methods with modern technology to enhance product value and build a distinctive industry brand for rural revitalization.
