China, Guangxi - For years, Guangxi's water transport required cargo to detour through the Pearl River to Guangzhou despite its coastal location. This will change with the construction of the Pinglu Canal, China's first river-sea canal since 1949, becoming a backbone project of the New Western Land-Sea Corridor.
The 134.2km Pinglu Canal with 72.7 billion yuan investment is scheduled for completion by December 2026. It will provide the shortest sea access for Guangxi, Yunnan and Guizhou through Beibu Gulf, cutting average shipping distance by over 560km.
Strategic Significance
