Welcome back to Philosophy at Berkeley! 2025-08-28

It is with very great excitement that we welcome our newest cohort of Philosophy PhD students: Lucas Goodman, Ryan Kendall, Elijah Parish, Matthew Sosa, roshni thangavelu-truax, Tessa Whittle, and Yao Yu, as well as Jad Damaj, Nai-Chung Hou, and August Noë, who are new PhD students in the Program in Logic and Methodology of Science.

A very warm welcome also to the visiting scholars and also visiting student researchers who join us at the invitation of our faculty and who make an enormous contribution to our community. This year we are joined by Christian Coseru, Michael Hinterberger, Sheridan Hough, Qiaochu Li, Rahul Maurya, Filippa Ronquist, and Hector Santillian. — Welcome to you all!

We bid farewell to members who recently graduated with the PhD: Scott Casleton, T. Haddow, Elek Lane, and Urte Laukaityte. We also bid adieu to Elias Allen.

We have a busy year of colloquia and special lectures, reading groups, and conferences, to look forward to this academic year. I am especially pleased to announce a new endowed lecture series: the Sarah Douglas Lectures in Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence, which will launch this year and has been made possible by a most generous and inspiring gift from Professor Sarah Douglas. Information about philosophy department events can be found on the department web site here. This web site is continuously being updated, so please do check back often.

As a department, we are only able to fulfill our mission to advance philosophy and train new generations of students thanks to the generous support of alumni, donors, and other friends. I am enormously grateful for your support and look forward to finding ways to work with you to keep philosophy strong at UC Berkeley.

– Alva Noë, Chair
