Trim a string in shell script

Nice trick just using echo command:

$ str=" a string " $ echo "[$str]" [ a string ] $ new=$(echo $str) $ echo "[$new]" [a string]

To trim an entire file:

sed 's/^[ \t]*//;s/[ \t]*$//' < input_file
